A Majority of Newark Students Struggle with Reading
The New Jersey Student Learning Assessments are administered annually in the spring for grades 3-9. In 2025, only 34% of Newark Public Schools’ students in grades 3-9 passed the state’s English Language Arts test. These results indicate that over 60% of New Jersey middle and elementary school students are not reading proficiently.
