Reading Proficiency Remains Out of Reach for Most Students
According to data from the Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford University, average test scores (both reading and math) in New Haven are 3.02 grade levels below the national average.

Data from the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) revealed that only 36% of fourth-grade students in CT scored at or above “proficiency” levels in reading, compared to 40% in 2019. This indicates that 6 out of every 10 students aged 9-10 are not reading proficiently.
