6 in 10 Boston Students Struggle with Reading
According to the 2025 Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), only 3 in 10 Boston students in grades 3-8 met or exceeded grade-level expectations for reading. These results indicate that over 60% of students are not fluent readers.
Per the 2024 Nation’s Report Card findings, only 31% of Boston’s fourth-graders scored at or above proficient on reading tests.
