Too Many Albany Students Are Falling Behind in Reading
Per the NY State Report Card, 38% of Grades 3-8 in Albany City School District scored ‘proficient’ or above in ELA (English Language Arts) during the 2024-25 school year. These results indicate that 60% of students in elementary and middle school are reading below grade level and need academic support.
According to the 2024 Nation’s Report Card, only 31% of fourth-grade students in NY State scored at or above “proficient” in reading.
Recent reporting by Melissa Manno of New York Focus indicates that, despite knowledge of best practices, teachers in Albany City School District “are often required to use reading programs that advocates say contradict the settled body of research around teaching reading.” Students are lacking proper instruction in phonics, vocabulary, oral language, and writing.
